Fear of ALLAH: The Prophet's Apprehensions at the time of Gale

Fear of ALLAH

Coupled with the remarkable spirit of sacrifice the Sahabah had a genuine and deep-rooted fear of ALLAH in their hearts. I wish today's Muslim could have an iota of that fear of ALLAH. Here are few stories about this aspect of their lives.

The Prophet's Apprehensions at the time of Gale :

Aisha (Radiallaho anha) relates that whenever a strong wind bringing dense clouds started blowing, the Prophet's face turned pale with the fear of ALLAH, He became restive and would go in and out with commotion and would recite the following prayer,

"O, my ALLAH ! I ask Thee the good out of this wind, the good out of that which is in this wind and the good out of that which is the outcome of this wind. I seek refuge in Thee from the evil out of this wind. I seek refuge in Thee from the evil out of this wind, from the evil of that which is in this wind and from the evil out of that which is the outcome of this wind,"

She says :

When it began to rain, signs of delight appeared on his face. I said to him once, "O, Prophet of ALLAH, when clouds appear everybody is happy as they fore-tell rain, but why is it that I see you so much perturbed at that time?" He replied, "O, Aisha ! How can I feel secure that this wind does not portend ALLAH's wrath? The A'ad were punished with the wind, They were happy when they beheld the gathering dense clouds believing that they brought rain, but actually those clouds brought not rain but utter destruction to A'ad." The prophet( PBUH) was, obviously, referring to the following verses of Quran :

Faith in the Unity of GOD is the most fundamental and the most basic teachings of the Holy prophet Mohammad (PBUH). This is expressed in the first Kalima (there is no deity but ALLAH). It is the route of all the teachings of Islam, Muslims are essentially required to offer five times formal prayer (salat) daily and in each prayer they repeatedly say before their GOD:

"Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we ask for help, And we did raise among every people a Messenger to preach to worship ALLAH ( GOD almighty alone ) and shun the evil one." ( AL-Nihal )

The meaning of the Kalima ( La ilaha illallah ) shall be very helpful in understanding the true impact of the ideology of Tawheed  that is oneness of GOD. Maulana Maudidi explains the Kalima as follows:

"In the Arabic language the world ilah means one who is worshiped, i.e., a being which on account of its greatness and power be considered worthy to be worshiped, to be bowed to in humility and submission. Anything or any being possessing power too great to be comprehended by man is also called ilah, the conception of ilah also includes the possession of infinite power, power that may astonish other. It also conveys the sense that others are dependent upon ilah and that he is not dependent upon any one else. The word ilah also carries a sense of concealment and mystery, that is, ilah would be a being unseen and impereceptible. The khuda in Persian, deva in hindi, and god in english bear, more or less similar meanings and significance. Other languages of the world
also contain words with a like sense." 

Article on Earth's History

The history of the earth starts from about 4.5 to 5 billion years back, when it achieved a separate existence through accretion of solid material. Following information from the Quran appears to through some light on the origin of the earth.

"...and we sent down the iron in which is severe strength and other benefits for mankind." (Surah AL-KHADEED. 25)

Iron is said to have been sent down, which means that it came from regions beyond the earth. In this connection and following information taken from New Scientist Jan 13th 1990 and journal of Chemical Education, Sept 1990 deserves to be compared with the text of the above information taken from the Quran, revealed 1400 years back.

'The ultimate stellar ash is made up of iron. In iron, atomic nuclei are packed as tightly as possible. Iron is the heaviest element that gets made in a star by standard nuclear burning, It has the most stable nucleus. The energy required to synthesize iron is not available on eart. Therefore the iron found in the earth must have been synthesized in outer space'.



Information from Quran as well as Science indicates that the iron present in the earth, a major portion of which forms the core, was sent down from the outer space and that the origin of the earth was associated with a star, the sun. The Chief constituents of the globe separated into a solid core and a silicate mantle, probably when the earth was still in a molten condition due to initial high temperature. Later differentiation produced the complex outer crust on which we live

Epistemology,or theory of knowledge,is the central core of any word-view. it is the parameter which delineates what is and what is not possible within the purview of Islam, what is possible to know and ought to be known, what is possible to know but is better avoided, and what is simply not possible to know .Epistemology seeks to define knowledge,distinguish it principal varieties,identify its sources and establish its limits, what can we know and how do we know ?"are questions central to epistemology, but these are not merely philosophical questions.They have a strong bearing in concrete reality:the response to these questions has implications for every aspect of human activity.

Indeed, the Quranic concept of "Knowledge" commonly translated as "ILM" orignaly shaped the main features of muslim civilization and guided it towards its zenith. Then as it should be now, Knowledge shaped the muslim mode of thought and inquiry. It determines how muslim can best preceive reality and shape and develop a just society. Knowledge is the glue that binds the Muslim Society with its envoirement, Hence giving Islam a dynamic, living form However, while the scholors and intellectuals of the classical period recognized that Knowledge was concept on which rested the very foundations of the muslim civilisation, and that it was an all pervasive value, contemporary scholars, both modernists and traditionalists, are largely oblivious to the key role that epistemology plays in shaping a society.

Science : 

The universe we live in, consists of innumerable material objects, animate and inanimate, either in motion or relatively at rest and energies in the form of heat, light, electricity e.t.c., which have provided us with practically all material comforts. A glance at the sky, specially at night, gives us an idea of vastness of space and the forces that hold together all heavenly bodies. The alternation of day and night makes us feel the passage of time in the form of hours, days and years.

          The universe does not exist in haphazard manner but is governed by regular laws right from an atom to the galaxies, With no liberty whatsoever, of anything going against any law. The rising and the setting of the sun, the regular changes in the area of brightness of the moon, the positions of stars at night, the movement of electrons in the atom, the laws of physics , chemistry, biology, geology e.t.c., the regularity in the sequence of birth, growth, decay and death in plants and animals, provide a conclusive proof of the existence of predestined and unchangeable laws of nature, confirmed by the Quran in the following terms :

"And whoever is in the skies and the earth bows down to ALLAH only, willingly or unwillingly."(Surah AL-RAADAH. 15)

          The known universe thus appears to be a complex combination of matter, energy, space, time and life. Matter and energy interact in space giving rise to motion and each each such movement of matter or an event covers a period of time. These basic entities which are mutually related and governed by laws of nature from the theme of science. Scientists seek to understand nature and reduce this understanding of theirs in the form of laws. In this effort of inquiry, observation, experimentation and inference, tremendous knowledge on various aspects of nature has been accumulated. Science is nothing but this accumulated knowledge of nature arranged systematically.
